FIBA U19 World Championship for Women
Canada surprise the USA

The FIBA Europe U18 champions Italy failed in their quest to qualify for the quarter-final of the World Championship after losing to Russia (55-62).

Italy had the better of the first 20 minutes and went into the locker room leading (32-18). However after the break, Russia went on a 18-4 run to level the tie (36-36).

The Italians were unable to stop the Russians and went into the final quarter trailing (42-45).

Alexandra Stolyar from Russia scored 18 of her 21 points during the second half of the game. But Ksenia Tikhonenko was the match winner with 22 rebounds of which 19 came from the defensive end. She also came up with 4 blocks.

Giulia Maffenini tried her best to keep Italy in the game by scoring 14 of her team's last 27 points.

Canada

Canada have had to wait 36 years for a victory against the USA in a world championship game. The Canadians were quickly into their game with a 6-0 opening and consolidated their advantage with a 12-0 run to close the quarter leading (20-10).

The USA had a much better second quarter. With 5 points coming from Ariel Massengale they only trailed (23-29) at the break.

The game went back and fourth during the third quarter with the teams trading baskets regularly with Canada holding onto the lead (39-34) with just over two minutes remaining in the quarter.

MichelleThe USA managed to level the score after a trey by Bria Hartley which was quickly followed by 2 points by Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis.

However a slip by Hartley resulting in a turnover allowed Canada to regain the lead on the buzzer going into the final quarter (41-39).

The Plouffe twins and Wumi Agunbiade from Canada continued to be active offensively as Canada went on a 8-1 run (49-40) to put their team in the driving seat for the rest of the game.

Michelle Plouffe (right) led the way with 24 points while her sister Katherine finished with 12 points. Agunbiade also finished in double digits with 15 points. For the USA only Massengale was in double digits with 17 points.

Japan lost to China (59-87) in the first game of the day.

The four teams advancing to the quarter-final in placement order are: Canada, USA, Japan and Russia. The teams will cross over to play the top four teams from Group F.

Italy and China will play in the 9th place classification round.
