LFB match: Nantes-Rezé let
Bourges off the hook


When the players from Nantes-Rezé review this LFB match they will be asking themselves how they lost.

They had similar statistics to Bourges in shooting and were perfect from the free-throw line. They won the battle of the boards and picked up more second-chance points.

In the first five minutes of the third quarter Nantes turned the ball over 4 times while Bourges Basket took the lead for good.

Bourges conceded just 10 points during the third quarter which was enough for them to take control of the game and hang on for victory (73-69).

Cathy Joens went 4-of-6 from beyond the arc and finished the game with 18 points and 4 assists while captain Emméline Ndongue (left) had 14 points and 3 blocks. Anaël Lardy had a perfect shooting day with 5-of-5 from the field for her 10 points while Nwal-Endéné Miyem scored 13 points.

For the hosts Allison Hightower scored 22 points while Caroline Aubert finished with 8 points and 7 assists.

With defeats for Tarbes and Montpellier Bourges are now two games clear at the top of the LFB.

Anaël Lardy © womensbasketball-in-france.com  Bourges got into their stride quickly with Nwal-Endéné Miyem, and Anaël Lardy (left) getting on the score board with less than a minute played.

Joyce Cousseins-Smith got the first points for Nantes-Rezé. Yet the Bourges Basket duo of Miyem and Lardy added 2 more points each for the guests to lead (8-2) with less than three minutes played.

Emméline Ndongue was then allowed a simple uncontested lay-up to complete the 6-0 run for Bourges Basket.

Allison Hightower and Cousseins-Smith were taking most of the shots for Nantes at the start with little success, 1-of-8. Hightower finally got on the score sheet with four minutes played.

The introduction of Caroline Aubert and Emilija Podrug changed things for Nantes-Reze as they quickly reduced their deficit (13-14 with seven minutes played.

A triple by Aubert put the hosts in front (16-14)with 90 seconds remaining in the quarter. Aubert hit the target again, this time for 2 points for her team to win the first quarter (18-14).

Both teams stepped up offensively in the second quarter with three-pointers flying in from all over the court.

Cathy Joens from Bourges was the first player to connect from behind the three-point line. But Nantes-Rezé stayed in front thanks to scores from Sabine Niedola and Hightower (22-19).

The intensity in defense also picked up pushing players further away from the paint. Jennifer Digbeu from Bourges levelled the score with a triple (24-24).

However Mélanie Plust restored the lead for the hosts almost immediately also from the land of many.

Allison Hightower © LFB  The two teams continued to exchange baskets in a lively phase with the hosts holding on a 4-point lead (36-22) after a another triple, by Hightower (right) with three minutes left before the interval.

Bourges fought back and tied the game on two occasions before conceding the first half (40-38) after 2 points by Jenna Smith.

Hightower led all scoring at the interval with 13 points while Joens from Bourges scored 10 points.

Bourges changed their defensive system forcing Nantes into committing 4 early turnovers as they finally went in front (45-44) with 23 minutes played.

Bourges stayed in front for the rest of the quarter and went into the final quarter leading (56-50).

Both sides started the final quarter cautiously. It took a trey from Cousseins-Smith (57-60) with three minutes played to finally open up the game.

Nwal-Endéné Miyem © LFB  It took a couple of individual exploits by Endéné Miyem (left) to get Bourges going again.

A triple by Joens left Bourges in the driving seat with four minutes left to play (66-59).

Bourges looked to have had the game won with a 9-point advantage (68-59) with 90 seconds left in the match.

However Aubert and Hightower for the hosts livened things up with a couple of treys in a late burst. But once again Joens saved Bourges with a BIG triple.

Miyem did the rest and Bourges held on to win (73-69).
