All the highlights from the fifth round of the EuroLeague Women 2008-2009 will be covered on this page.

Bourges Basket losing for the second time

It was not the evening for Bourges Basket as they went down on the road (58-62) to Mizo Pécs 2010.

They struggled offensively and never got into their stride. They managed only 2-of-10 from beyond the arc.

Their shooting percentage within the arc only improved due to the performance of Alexandra Santos (20 points) who went 8-of-10.

Despite all their difficulties, they only trailed by 2 points by the end of the first period (14-16).

Bourges were to lose contact for good two minutes into the second quarter as Anna Vajda (17 points) put the home side in front for good.

Mizo Pécs led by as many as 10 points (28-18) during the second period as they took command of the game.

Bourges managed to reduce the deficit before the interval but ended up trailing by 10 points (43-33) midway through the third period.

Mizo Pécs stretched their advantage to 11 points going into the final period (50-39).

Bourges made one big effort during the last quarter and with five minutes to play trailed by 2 points (50-52).

This was as close as they got as their opponents went to record their third consecutive game.

EuroLeague Women qualifying Group A - Halcon Avenida aiming high

Donnette Snow was the player of the match with 24 points and 13 rebounds while Ewelina Kobryn led the scoring for Wisla with 22 points.

Besiktas Cola Turka notched up their second victory of the season with a (89-81) victory against Russian club side Nadezhda.

Playing at home Besiktas Cola Turka managed to pull away from their guests during the third period 23-11 to go into the final period leading (73-61).

Anastasiya Veremeenko  ©  FIBA Europe They increased their advantage to 20 points midway through the final period (84-64). Nadezhda came storming back to set up a tense finish (81-87).

Laura Harper put an end to their guests' revival with 30 seconds left in the game.

With this defeat Nadezhda are two games down on their nearest rivals and are just 1-of-2 teams without a victory.

Milica Dabovic, who played at Mondeville last season led the scoring for the winners with 21 points. She also dished out 4 assists before fouling out.

However the player of the match playing for Nadezhda was Belarus international Anastasiya Veremeenko (above) with 28 points and 20 rebounds.

Bourges Basket, Mizo Pécs 2010 and Wisla Can-Packs are all tied for second place with three wins and two defeats.

EuroLeague Women qualifying Group B - Umana Reyer are top

This was the round for the teams playing at home with all three teams coming out on top.

MKB Euroleasing had a yo-yo battle with Gambrinus Sika Brno before coming away winners (68-65).

The two sides were level at the interval (34-34). Then the home side took the lead for good late in the third period (44-41). The closest Gambrinus Sika were to drawing level was at (50-52) with seven minutes to play.

This is the third victory of MKB while for Gambrinus this is their third defeat.

Umana Reyer are enjoying the EuroLeague Wwomen competition as they notched up victory number 5 with a (63-60) win against CSKA Moscow.

CSKA looked to have the game in control leading (21-14) by the end of the first period. They then struggled all through the second period and fell behind by the interval (35-39).

With the teams level (45-45) after 27 minutes of play, the Italian side with Simona Ballardina and Mariangela Ciron went into overdrive to go ahead (52-45) going into the final period.

CSKA came to within 1 point of their hosts during the last quarter. Buth they were never in a position to dictate the pace and ended up dropping their second game on the road.

Vanessa Hayden-Johnson with 19 points and 13 rebounds and 19- year old Giorgia Sottana with 14 points and 4 assists led the way for Reyer.

Katie Douglas scored 23 points and was joined in double digits by Ann Waulters with 18 points and 13 rebounds for CSKA.

Villeneuve d'Ascq recorded their first victory with a comfortable (71-53) victory against TTT Riga.

Géraldine Robert was the pick of the players with 21 points and 15 rebounds.



EuroLeague Women qualifying Group C

There was only one match played on Wednesday in this group with Ros Casares winning on the road against Croatian club side Jolly JBS Sibenik (83-72).

Ros Casares were leading (37-20) at the interval and stretched their advantage to more than 20 points (45-22) with 24 minutes played.

Jolly JBS chased after the score for the rest of the match and trailed by 13 points (44-57) going into the final period.The last quarter was thrilling end to end basketball.

However Ros Casares were never in trouble and allowed the host only to come to within ten points (60-69) with four minutes left to play.

Amaya Valdemoro led the scoring with 24 points and was joined in double digits by four other players.

For the hosts Kerrig Gardin and Ivana Jurcevic both scored 20 points.

Lotos PKO BP Gdynia beat ZVVZ USK Prague (71-57) despite 21 points from Lindsay Whalen.

Lotus PKO BP did most of the damage during the first half of the match (44-26). Ivana Matovic led the scoring with 18 points.

UMMC Ekaterinburg lead the EuroLeague Women qualification group and are two games clear of Ros Casares.

ZVVZ USK Prague are currently in last position with one victory while the remaining three teams on identical records of two wins and three defeats.


EuroLeague Women qualifying Group D

TEO Vilnius showed no mercy during the second half of their match against Maxima Broker. They outscored their opponents 47-24 to win the match (72-49).

With this victory they stay top of the group with 4 wins and 1 defeat. They had four player in double digits with Crystal Langhorne once again the player of the match with 19 points and 15 rebounds.

Noel Kuin, Lindsey Wilson and Daina Staugaitiene scored 18, 14 and 11 points respectively.

Linda Fröhlich was the only player in double digits for Maxima Brocker with 11 points.

Fenerbahce had to wait until late in the final period to record a precious road victory against Italian club side Beretta Famila (73-68).

With 90 seconds left to play the two teams were level (68-68) and Emilie Gomis became the hero as she scored the last 5 points of the match.

With this victory Fenerbahce move two games clear of their Italian rivals and consolidate their position as fourth in the group.

CSKA Moscow are second in the group after their victory against Montpellier with an identical record to group leaders TEO.
